The Meteorological Department has said in a statement today that heavy rains may occur in Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Zhob, Loralai, Nasirabad, Sibi, Kalat and Makran divisions of Balochistan.

Apart from this, there is a possibility of heavy rain in many areas of Sindh and Punjab. Due to these rains, there is also a fear of changing the flood situation in the rivers of Punjab.

According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), high-level floods are expected in the Chenab river at Marala Khanki and Kadirabad in the next 24 hours due to rains. The level of flood water in Chenab river may rise from two lakh cusecs to two and a half lakh cusecs.

40,000 to 55,000 cusecs of water will pass through Jasar and Shahdara in Ravi river. There is moderate flood situation in Nala Bayan and low flood situation in Pulko. Low level flood situation in Indus River continues.

Spokesman PDMA Chaudhry Mazhar Hussain while talking to Independent Urdu said that ‘According to our information, no additional water has been released by India in Chenab River or Ravi River. These rivers are flowing normally. Heavy rains in the upper areas are expected to cause high level flooding in the next 24 hours only in Chenab.

According to the spokesperson of PDMA: ‘The rainwater coming from the rivers and mountains on Mount Sulaiman is also falling into the Indus River. Preparations are complete to save the population near these rivers and mountains. So far, water has not been allowed to enter even these settlements. So, the situation is under complete control so far, but there is a risk of the flood situation changing with the new series of rains.’

Director General of PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia while talking to Independent Urdu said that ‘PDMA and the administration are on high alert in view of the possible flood situation. All arrangements are complete in view of flood risk. Instructions have been issued to the administration regarding the river Chenab, Ravi and rivers to remain alert.

He further said that ‘according to the instructions of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, the citizens are being informed about the possible danger. Evacuation of the citizens living in the rivers is being ensured.

People are requested to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers and streams. Stay away from rivers and streams in view of flood situation.’

On the other hand, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said that there is a risk of urban flooding in various cities of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan as a result of heavy rains during the next 24 to 48 hours.

The NDM has said in a statement issued on Saturday that rains may cause urban flooding in Lahore, Sialkot and Narwal in Punjab.

The NDMA says that there is a risk of medium to high level flood relay in Chenab river which may cause inundation in local rivers.

“The possibility of urban flooding has also been shown in the districts of Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur and Multan in southern Punjab, while there may be a risk of torrential rain in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur.”

Due to heavy rain in Balochistan, Kalat, Zariat, Zhob and Quetta Hill could be hit by torrent. Urban flooding may occur at a few places in Nawabshah and Sukkur in Sindh.

Stay tuned for urban weather updates and alerts and download the NDMA Disaster Alerts app for monsoon alerts, NDMA says.

Residential roofs and windows in low-lying areas should be properly waterproofed to avoid the effects of urban flooding. Special measures should be taken to avoid accumulation of rain water. Drainage system should be made effective.

According to the NDMA: ‘Avoid walking, swimming or driving in urban flood water. Use alternate routes to avoid flooded areas.’
