Hundreds of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party officials said Monday that hundreds of his supporters gathered in front of his hilltop home in the capital, Islamabad, vowing to prevent his arrest on anti-terror charges.
This follows a police lawsuit filed by Khan on Saturday for threatening government officials in a public address over allegations of police torture of one of his aides, who faces charges of instigating a rebellion in the country’s powerful military.
Demonstrators chanted slogans once morest the government of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, which took power following Khan was ousted in a confidence vote in April.
“If Imran Khan is arrested…we will take Islamabad with the power of the people,” Ali Amin Gandapur, a former cabinet minister, said on Twitter, while some party leaders urged Khan’s supporters to prepare for a mass rally.
Murad Saeed, another former minister, told local TV channels that police had issued arrest warrants for Khan.
But Islamabad police refused to confirm this.
The use of anti-terror laws as a basis for lawsuits once morest politicians is common in Pakistan, and the Khan government has also used them once morest dissidents.
