Pakistan has seen a lot of innovation in art: Sri Lankan Mir dance

Third day of Pakistan Theater Festival at Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi Sri Lanka A dance group from Dance and presented the music-based program ‘Kanya’.

When the Independent Urdu team reached the Arts Council, the members of the Sri Lankan Dance Group were busy preparing behind the stage.

It was only a matter of time before the dance began that choreographer Chandana Wickramasinghe spoke to Independent Urdu in which he shared details regarding the cultural dance.

Chandana Wickramasinghe said that the three main classical dances of Sri Lanka are Kandyan dance, Sabaragamuwa dance and Pahatha Ratanatham.

Sri Lankan troupe performed Kandyan dance at Karachi Arts Council.

Chandna Wickramasinghe said that his dance style is called Navarnitya and this style includes Kandyan, Khatakali, and Manipuri.

Chandana Wickramasinghe told Independent Urdu regarding the traditional dance that ‘Kandyan dance is named following Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and this ancient dance was developed during the reign of the kings.

‘Today it is called the national dance of Sri Lanka. Usually it imitates the movements of animals like elephants and peacocks.

Kandyan dancers wear striking costumes, such as male skirts that adorn their chests with silver and elaborate headgear.

The Navnartiya style, as well, is an alternative approach to Indian dance and consists of the ‘alchemy’ of several traditional Indian dance forms, ballet, martial arts, and yoga.

Chandana, who arranges Sri Lankan dance, said that his group came to Pakistan following 12 years and was very happy to see the development of the art here.

“There has been a lot of innovation in the world of art in Pakistan and there is no shortage of people who understand the style of dance.” We will also enjoy dancing.’

To present the dance at the Pakistan Arts Council, Chandana’s dance troupe consisted of four girls and three boys, who performed brilliantly on stage.

The dance performers were dressed in cultural attire and wore cultural jewellery.

Attendees were mesmerized as they performed, managing facial expressions with dance.

Dance Mir Chandana Wickramasinghe said that to perform Sri Lankan traditional dance, a dancer’s body needs to be flexible, which requires yoga or exercise.

‘Traditional Sri Lankan dance is not just for fat girls.’

Arts Council President Muhammad Ahmed Shah, Sri Lankan Consul General Jagath Abhivarna and diplomats from other countries also participated in the event.
