Pakistan reportedly deported 1.7 lakh Afghan nationals through Torkham border. The government had issued an ultimatum to foreign nationals residing illegally in the country to leave Pakistan before November 1. 6,500 people returned to Afghanistan on Sunday alone. A total of 1,74,358 nationals have arrived in Afghanistan since September 17, the Taliban said.

More than 500 prisoners from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Islamabad were deported between November 1 and 4. According to official figures, 194 prisoners from various districts of Punjab were brought to the Torkham border for repatriation. The Pakistani government has announced that it will bear the expenses of repatriating foreign nationals. International organizations including the United Nations have criticized Pakistan’s move to deport migrants.

Lack of infrastructure will be a setback for those coming from Pakistan to Afghanistan. Arshad Malik, Country Director of Save the Children, said that many of the returnees do not have educational records and it is difficult for them to continue their studies. He also warned that child labor and involvement of children in smuggling is likely to increase due to poverty. Pakistan’s decision to expel the Afghans will lead to a humanitarian crisis, Hina Jilani, chairperson of the Pakistan Human Rights Commission, said in a letter to UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, most of whom fled Afghanistan following the Taliban took over in August 2021.
