Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has invited the Afghanistan national team for the first time after Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to Afghanistan.
PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said that we will try to find a possible window for the tour and if not 2021 then we will definitely try to plan the series in the 2022 season.
He said that the cricket series between Pakistan and Afghanistan can prove to be the path of peace and love between the two countries
In May 2011, an Afghan national team toured Pakistan although they played matches against Pakistan’s second-class team and those matches were not given first-class status.
The prime minister visited Afghanistan on Thursday where he called for a reduction in violence and a ceasefire between the Taliban and Afghan forces.
The Afghanistan team has usually beaten second-tier teams like Ireland, Scotland and Hong Kong etc. but their cricket has clearly improved in the last few years and they have hit their opponents for sixes on several occasions.
Something similar happened last year before the World Cup in England in a friendly match when the Afghan team defeated Pakistan, which was followed by celebrations across Afghanistan and fear of aerial fire from machine guns. A security lockdown was imposed in the country’s embassies.
Most Afghans became familiar with the game in the 1980s when millions of people migrated to Peshawar, just 50 kilometers from their border, due to war in their home country.
So far many international matches have been played between the two countries, but the relationship between the cricket boards of the two countries is strong.
Wasim Khan said that a strong Afghanistan means a strong Asian bloc, so Pakistan will continue to play its role and help Afghan cricket.
Afghanistan will host Pakistan for three ODIs in the World Cup 2023 Super League, with the series likely to be held in the United Arab Emirates.
