Pakistan cinema: 2023 a nightmare, 2024 fears more than hope

So in the year 2023 Pakistan Dozens of films were released but the most successful the film She got the movie ‘The Legend of Moolah Jat’ to be released in 2022.

The highest box office business last year was 2022’s ‘The Legend of Moolah Jat’ which is a record of its kind.

Year 2023 Pakistan cinema and Film industry turned out to be a nightmare that everyone associated with the industry wants to forget.

Hamza Ali Abbasi and Fawad Khan’s film ‘The Legend of Moolah Jat’, released on October 13, 2022, had collected over Rs 100 crore in Pakistan alone by the end of 2022.

After a late success, it was hoped that Pakistan cinema, which was struggling to recover due to the unavailability of Bollywood and then due to the Corona virus, would come out with energy once once more.

But successive unsuccessful films not only made the filmmakers cry, but also the ambitions of the cinema owners were left as ambitions.

The sad situation is that none of the Pakistani films released in the year 2023 crossed the 12 crore mark.

In 2023, on Eid-ul-Fitr, the movie ‘Money Back Guarantee’, featuring multiple stars including Fawad Khan, Waseem Akram, Shanira Akram, failed at the box office.

The box office business of this film in Pakistan was less than 12 crores which shocked the film industry.

The second most successful film of the year, ‘Teri Meri Kani’, was originally a collection of three short films, which was released on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, and this film managed to do a box office business of a little over 8 crores.

Although it featured Mehwish Hayat, Wahaj Ali, Hara Mani, Mani, and Ramsha Khan, this tri-color bouquet did not go down well with the public.

Apart from these two films, only ‘Allah Yaar, Da Hundred Flower of God’ which was an animated film, made around 4 crores at the box office.

Apart from this, none of the films might even come close to 2 crores and failed miserably.

Interestingly, ‘The Legend of Moolah Jatt’, which had collected around Rs 102 crore at the box office by the end of December 2022, managed to earn another Rs 16 crore in January-December 2023.

In this way, the highest grossing film in the year 2023 was ‘The Legend of Moolah Jat’.

If you exclude Mola Jatt from the count, the box office total of all Pakistani films combined is not even 30 crores in the whole year.

If we compare it to 2022, only two films ‘Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad’ and ‘London Nahi Jaon Ga’ had a box office of more than 50 crores this year.

Year 2024, Concerns and Expectations

After a disastrous year like 2023, three films are all set to release in the first month of the new year itself.
