The Hangor-class submarine is capable of undertaking a variety of missions depending on operational requirements.
The keel-laying ceremony of the first of eight Hangor-class submarines to be built under a ‘technology transfer’ agreement between Pakistan and China was held in the port city of Karachi in the south of the country, the Pakistan Navy said.
Pakistani Navy Chief Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi, along with senior Pakistani and Chinese officials, including representatives of M/S China Shipbuilding Offshore Company (CSOC), attended the ceremony at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW), the specialist shipbuilding division of the Pakistan Navy, according to a navy statement.
Under a defense agreement between Islamabad and Beijing, eight Hangor-class submarines will be built – four are being built at Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group (WSIG) in China, and as many are being built at KSEW under a technology transfer agreement.
The submarine has advanced stealth features and is equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors to operate in a multi-threat environment and can engage targets from a distance.
Admiral Niazi, in his remarks, said that the Pakistan Navy is aware of the evolving geostrategic situation in the region and will continue to “develop naval potential, improve naval construction infrastructure and to equip platforms with advanced weapons and sensors to counter traditional and asymmetric threats”.
