After exchange of strikes, Pakistan and Iran agree to expand security cooperation
Islamabad – Reuters
Pakistan and Iran said on Monday that they respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and are determined to expand security cooperation and intensify efforts to mend relations following exchanging missile strikes this month on what they said were militant targets.
The foreign ministers of the two countries held talks in the Pakistani capital following days of military tension between the two countries, which raised concern regarding the expanding scope of unrest that the region has witnessed since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.
Foreign Minister of the interim Pakistani government, Jalil Abbas Gilani, said during a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdullahian: The two neighbors were able to resolve the misunderstandings very quickly.
Gilani stated that the two countries also agreed to combat terrorism, each on its own soil, and address each other’s concerns.
Abdullahian said: The two countries have a good understanding, adding that there have never been regional disputes or wars between Iran and Pakistan. He added that Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi will visit Pakistan soon.
Tensions escalated between the two countries following the missile attacks, as Pakistan recalled its ambassador from Tehran and did not allow his counterpart to return to Islamabad, in addition to canceling all high-level diplomatic and commercial ties.
But efforts were soon made to calm the tension, as the envoys were instructed to return to their positions, and Abdullahian called for talks. The two countries have a history of tense relations, but the missile strikes were the most serious incidents in years.
