Pajamas | A bit of your history

Learn a little more regarding the history of pajamas

Pajamas are one of the most famous pieces in the world of intimate fashion, mainly because they are indispensable. This clothing is normally used for sleeping and its main objective is to promote maximum comfort to ensure a good night’s sleep.

They are usually found in sets, being possible to be pants and a t-shirt, or shorts and a thin strap tank top (considered a short doll) or something sexier, like a baby doll. Regardless of the model chosen, they all value maximum comfort and are therefore made with fabrics that can meet this need, such as cotton, satin or silk.

Knowing the importance of these pieces in the daily lives of so many people, this text will tell you a little more regarding the history of pajamas and what it took for them to become what they are today!

The settlers know the sleepwear!

Before 1870, in Europe, which was considered the greatest power at the time, nightwear, known today as pajamas, did not exist. Unlike lingerie, which has existed since the Middle Ages, pajamas have a very recent history, which began in 1870.

The clothes used to sleep before that year were the same used during the day, some pieces were removed for more comfort, but clothes were not changed. After all, the only purpose of this piece during the night was to protect from the intense cold of the region.

When the Europeans, more specifically the British, arrived in India in 1870, they discovered the Hindu sleeping suits, which were nothing more than long robes tied around the waist, being used by both men and women.

Popularity of pajamas around the world

When Europeans got to know the Oriental pieces used for sleeping, this concept was taken to Europe and soon spread around the world. However, these garments, which resemble current nightgowns, were worn by the nobility.

Pajamas became so successful that at the end of the 19th century, stylists began to design male models with pants and shirts, almost all sets also had a cap. From the advance of the industrial revolution, these sets began to be produced in mass, being made mainly of flannel and silk.

These models were limited exclusively to male use, being possible to buy them with checkered or striped prints.

Women’s sleepwear gained space

In the transition from the 19th century to the 20th century, women still might not wear pants in public and nightwear was the same as that discovered in 1870 in the East. But in 1920 this scenario changed considerably thanks to the stylist Gabrielle Coco Chanel.

This year, the stylist developed a totally innovative and elegant women’s nightwear line, with silk pieces, sets with pants, more elaborate nightgowns, and this gained the taste of women. It was common for women to wear these costumes at home all the time, and it was possible to find some who paraded the pieces through the streets.

These pieces like pajamas become indispensable!

This action that took place in 1920 shook the market and from then on several models began to emerge, being increasingly elaborate and with the aim of reaching mainly the female audience.

In 1960, the famous short dolls appeared and from that moment on, it was increasingly important to innovate in the creation of pajamas. This story gave rise to the models we know today, such as the sexy nightgown, which have become indispensable in any woman’s closet.
