Painting that irritates: XVIII Vilnius painting triennial and the challenges of contemporary art | Culture

Artists from these countries are known for their ability to react quickly and sensitively to the events happening around us and in the world. Continuing the traditions of the triennial, the works of artists from the Baltic countries and Poland will also be presented.

“The name of the triennale, ‘I’m here, not for you to tolerate me, I’m here for you to irritate’, responds not only to the relationship that exhibitions and other events will try to create with the viewer, but also, in a certain sense, the relationship with oneself. During the triennial, the question will be raised as to whether painting as a medium fulfills the function of art and the purpose of promoting critical thinking, enlightening and educating”, says Meda Norbutaitė, the main curator of the International Triennial of Vilnius Painting.

Henrik B. Andersen, the curator of the Nordic exposition, says that “based on eight different directions of contemporary Nordic painting, the exhibition examines and discusses the multipolar approach of painting to the world around us. How does painting perceive itself as a medium in a world that already mediates and is medialized?’

The purpose of the triennial is to draw attention to the pains of today’s life and to explore how artists present and reflect this in their work. The event pays a lot of attention to the latest and innovative painting trends, aims to convey and conceptualize the essence of contemporary art, to show the diversity and variety of artistic reflections of the painting medium.

This attention to the latest art trends is particularly reflected in the exhibition of Polish artists, whose curator Krzysztof Stanisławski emphasizes the talent of the new generation.

“All the Polish painters presented at the International Painting Triennale, except for one – Ewa Miazek, who is a classic of Polish painting, represents the new generation of our art. This is the latest and most relevant phenomenon that has emerged a few years ago, but has yet to receive the critical attention or appreciation it deserves. The new generation consists of very talented artists, young masters, original and universal, who have lost that Central European “regionalism”, a certain provinciality that was valuable and understandable to us, but not necessarily in the world.” Stanisławski adds: “We are talking about a New Self-Expression, a new wave of art …”, says K.Stanisławski.
