In the summer of 2020, Alexei Navalny narrowly survived a poison attack. Putin’s best-known opponent is now serving a prison sentence of several years. His lawyer fears that he will be muzzled there forever.

According to his lawyer, Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, who was imprisoned in Russia, is again seriously ill. Last weekend, an ambulance had to be called to the prison camp at night because of the severe stomach pain, Vadim Kobsev wrote Twitter. “An unknown disease that nobody treats,” he added.

The 46-year-old Navalny, who already looked significantly emaciated on earlier video recordings, has now lost another eight kilograms in body weight within around two weeks. The prison administration does not pass on the medicines that Navalny’s mother sends.

Kobsev went on to say that he did not rule out that Navalny, who narrowly survived an assassination attempt with the neurotoxin “Novichok” in 2020, will now be made sick again in a targeted manner. He therefore demands a toxicological and radiological examination of his client. “That may sound like nonsense and paranoia to others, but not to Navalny after Novichok,” explained the lawyer. Navalny himself blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the attack on him. The Kremlin rejected this.

For more than two years, Navalny has been in particularly harsh prison conditions in the notorious Pokrov penal camp, about 100 kilometers north-east of Moscow. He was sentenced by a Russian court for alleged fraud, but internationally the prominent opponent of Putin is considered a political prisoner. In the past few months, he has repeatedly been transferred to a small solitary cell, where he has repeatedly complained about health problems.
