The Padres have added a luxury talent, announcing a multimillion-dollar deal with Dominican Leodalis De Vries, the number 1 promise on MLB Pipeline’s list of Top 100 International Prospects.
According to Jesse Sánchez of MLB.com, the deal was for US$4.2 million.
De Vries, 17, has advanced hitting ability, with power potential from both sides of the plate. The shortstop might become a 20-homer-per-season producer, according to some evaluators. He also knows how to negotiate his walks and exhibits above-average pitch recognition – an advanced talent for his age.
De Vries is a soft shortstop defender, with the intangibles to be a long-term shortstop. However, at six feet two inches tall, plus an above-average arm, the youngster might play any position in the infield.
