Pablo Torres scores double in Tour de l’Avenir, busy Jarno Widar limits damage

Pablo Torres did an excellent job in the Tour de l’Avenir. The Spanish talent fluttered to victory and yellow in the mountain stage to the ski resort of Les Karellis. In the background, a busy Jarno Widar made an impression. Our compatriot finished third and remains second in the standings, half a minute behind.

After his second place on Wednesday, Jarno Widar hoped to make another attempt at the stage win in the Tour de l’Avenir on Thursday. The difficult final climb to the ski area Les Karellis offered opportunities.

On that final climb, a joust between the favorites followed. Especially the best two riders from the past Giro Next Gen showed themselves. Giro winner Widar (18) was the first to give a few jabs, but when Pablo Torres, runner-up in the Giro, went a bit later, Widar stayed put.

Torres took off like a rocket and picked up the last escapees. In the background Widar kept stirring and because of him, among others, yellow jersey Joe Blackmore had to let go.

Widar kept fighting for what he was worth, but he didn’t see Torres again. The 18-year-old Torres won the stage with more than half a minute ahead of the Dutchman Darren van Bekkum. A little later Widar came over the line in third place.

Torres also seizes power in the standings: he now leads Widar by 31 seconds. Our compatriot will have to try to make up for that deficit on Saturday in the final stage to the tough Colle delle Finestre. A sprint opportunity follows on Friday.
