P. Suretis (GEK TERNA): “We can put an end to the suffering of our fellow citizens in Kifissos”

«Smart cities, smart buildings, smart infrastructures through technology create an upgraded living, working and commuting environment that promises the modern citizen a better quality of life, safety, economy in resource management and a low environmental footprint. This new reality comes to serve the construction companies that plan a secure future“, noted mandated advisor of GEK TERNA Mr. Petros Suretis in the framework of the OT Forum.

Analyzing the role that technology can play in the infrastructure sector, Mr. Suretis said that we need to see the possibilities offered by technological development not only in facilitating the implementation of the infrastructures, but also in their very design and operation. In particular, he pointed out that the use of smart applications in buildings, transport, parking areas, signaling, street lighting, but also in environmental sensors and water and waste management infrastructures, can contribute significantly to the gathering of a large amount of useful data (big data) that currently remains unused and which could generate predictive models. “In this way, we can achieve resource savings, better energy efficiency, a lower environmental footprint and ultimately offer people an upgraded quality of lifesafety against the dangers of the natural and man-made environment and to achieve a more sustainable everyday life” added Mr. Suretis.

In addition, GEK TERNA’s appointed counsel did special mention to the need to develop new infrastructure bringing as a typical example the traffic in Attica. “Kifissos-Kifissias-Katehaki make up the cross of martyrdom every day for drivers, affecting and feeding back problems on the other central arteries as well, including Attica Odos, on which the average daily traffic approaches 250 thousand vehicles” said Mr. Suretis, adding that countless working hours are lost every day in Kifissos, causing a significant environmental burden, while this daily suffering has a negative impact on the mental health of tens of thousands of citizens.

“However, there is a solution, which will remove a large number of cars from Kifissos, but most importantly it will divert heavy vehicles from the road axis, improving both the volume and the speed of movement in Kifissos”, noted Mr. Suretis, pointing out that there is currently the possibility for the creation of a new highway that will connect Elefsina with Oinophytawhich by extension concerns the connection of the Western section of the Attica Road, and the southern road axes of Greece, with the area of the country north of Oinophyta, thereby bypassing the already burdened road network of the Attica Basin and serving the direct road connection of the important Industrial Areas of Oinophyta, Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, Thriasios field as well as the Cargo Port of Piraeus.

In particular, the design of the new highway provides that it starts from the western part of the Attica Odos highway in the area of Ag. Louka (Thriasio Pedio) and ends at the PATHE highway in the area of Oinofyta, with a length of about 40 km. It is a modern highway with two traffic lanes in each direction, with uneven junctions and a semi-junction, side and vertical roads to restore continuity and structure of the existing local road network, two-sided Motorist Service Station and all the required supporting facilities.

“Solutions like this can be implemented quickly and have substantial results in the traffic area of the basin”, said Mr. Suretis, adding that the relevant legislative framework already exists so that such innovative and complex projects contribute to the strengthening of regional development and development of the national economy and can be implemented through project contracts, concession contracts and public-private partnerships (PPPs), become a reality. “We can put an end to the suffering of our fellow citizens in Kifissos,” concluded Mr. Petros Suretis.
