What inspired Clara Van Der Meer to open a new thrift store in Zwijndrecht?
Archyde Exclusive Interview: A Conversation with Local Thrift Store Innovator, Clara Van Der Meer
By Archys, Archyde News Editor
As the Waasland region kicks off 2025 with a flurry of activity—from festive Epiphany celebrations to thrilling sports victories—one story stands out as a beacon of sustainability and community spirit: the opening of a new thrift store in Zwijndrecht. To delve deeper into this exciting growth, we sat down with Clara Van Der Meer, the visionary behind Ibogem’s latest venture and a passionate advocate for sustainable living.
Archyde: Clara, thank you for joining us today. the new thrift store in Zwijndrecht has been making waves. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this project?
Clara Van Der Meer: Thank you for having me! The inspiration behind this store is twofold. First, we wanted to continue Ibogem’s mission of promoting sustainability and reducing waste. The closure of our Warande thrift store in Beveren left a gap in the community, and we saw an possibility to reimagine what a thrift store could be.Second, we wanted to create a space that not only offers affordable, high-quality items but also fosters a sense of community. Zwijndrecht felt like the perfect location to bring this vision to life.
Archyde: The timing of the opening seems important, coming right after the holiday season. Was this intentional?
Clara Van Der Meer: Absolutely. The holiday season often leads to an increase in waste, as people declutter their homes and make room for new gifts. We wanted to open at a time when people are thinking about sustainability and giving items a second life. It’s also a great opportunity for bargain hunters to start the new year with a fresh perspective on consumption.
Archyde: The store has been described as more than just a thrift shop. Can you elaborate on what sets it apart?
Clara Van Der Meer: Certainly! While we still offer the conventional thrift store experience—clothing, furniture, and household items—we’ve added some unique elements. For example, we’ve introduced a “repair and upcycle” corner where customers can learn how to mend or repurpose items. We’ve also partnered with local artisans to showcase their work, creating a space where creativity and sustainability intersect. Additionally, we’re planning workshops and community events to engage with our customers on a deeper level.
Archyde: That sounds fantastic! Speaking of community, how has the response been so far?
Clara Van Der Meer: The response has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve seen a steady stream of visitors, from families looking for affordable clothing to collectors searching for unique finds. The community has really embraced the store, and we’ve already received donations of high-quality items. it’s heartwarming to see people come together to support a more sustainable way of living.
Archyde: looking ahead, what are your goals for the store in 2025?
Clara Van Der Meer: Our primary goal is to establish the store as a hub for sustainability in the Waasland region. We want to expand our workshops and events, offering more opportunities for people to learn about sustainable practices. We’re also exploring partnerships with local schools and organizations to promote environmental awareness. Ultimately, we hope to inspire other communities to adopt similar initiatives.
Archyde: That’s an inspiring vision. Before we wrap up,do you have any advice for people looking to live more sustainably in the new year?
Clara Van Der Meer: My advice would be to start small.Sustainability doesn’t have to be overwhelming—it can be as simple as repairing a piece of clothing rather of throwing it away or shopping second-hand before buying new. Every small action adds up, and together, we can make a big difference.
Archyde: Thank you, Clara, for sharing your insights and for your dedication to creating a more sustainable future. We look forward to seeing the impact of your work in the Waasland region and beyond.
Clara van Der Meer: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure.
