Oxfam denounces “obscene inequalities” between the ultra-rich and the rest of the world: what about us?

Ofam published a report on the occasion of the opening of the Davos Economic Forum. In particular, we discover that the “gap” is widening between the rich and the poor.

Elon Musk, Bernard Arnault, Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison and Mark Zuckerberg. These are the five richest people in the world. Since 2020, they have almost doubled their fortune. Their combined wealth increased from $405 billion to $869 billion. Oxfam therefore compares the fact that the ultra-rich see their financial weight grow year following year, but at the same time, the 5 billion poorest people in the world continue to become poorer. “We cannot continue with these obscene levels of inequality,” said the interim director of Oxfam International, Amitabh Behar, adding that “this capitalism is at the service of the ultra-rich”.

What regarding in Belgium?

Here, 10% of Belgians hold 55% of the wealth and yet Belgium is not one of the worst performers. If inequalities are less widened here than elsewhere, it is thanks to our social protection system. It allows for better distribution within the population. There are pensions or automatic salary indexation.
