ÖVP and SPÖ will talk to each other on Tuesday

A conversation between ÖVP chairman Karl Nehammer and Andreas Babler from the SPÖ is planned for Tuesday. Both party leaders are invited to talks with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen on Monday – according to Herbert Kickl, head of the election winner FPÖ.

It was an informal exchange after the election, it was said upon request from the ÖVP, where the date was confirmed. However, it was still Federal President Van der Bellen’s turn, they emphasized. He had only invited Kickl to the Hofburg on Friday; there had not yet been an official order to form a government. On Monday it will be Nehammer and Babler’s turn. The next day, the two party leaders wanted to talk to each other in the Federal Chancellery, it was said.

The SPÖ also confirmed the planned meeting. Both sides emphasized that these were not negotiations or exploratory talks. They also reportedly want to hold talks with Neos boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger. Both the ÖVP and SPÖ had always emphasized that they did not want to form a government with the FPÖ under Kickl. However, the ÖVP and SPÖ only have a wafer-thin majority in the National Council. For this reason, a third coalition partner, i.e. Neos or the Greens, would be advantageous.
