Digital certificates and student ID cards
In the future, school reports will be digitized and available to citizens digitally even following school. Student ID cards are also going digital. Students can apply for edu.digicard for free, and students under 14 years of age can apply for free by their legal guardians. The approved legislative package also includes extending the time limit for school experiments to twice the duration of educational courses and streamlining data collection for summer schools.
Final work on AHS will begin next school year
Until now, the final assignment in ordinary middle schools has been “literary works.” The format is now open and students have the opportunity to present multimedia products, works such as sculptures, video reports, podcasts or empirical investigations and their interpretations instead of a classic thesis. Students should be able to decide for themselves whether they want to create work digitally, analogically, or combinatorially, taking into account the specific skills of artificial intelligence. According to the interpretation of the proposed amendments, documentation and reflection of the development process and sources used are important for verifiability and evaluation. During the transition period (including the 2028/29 academic year), students may choose to sit another written or oral Matura examination instead of the final paper. In the future, secondary vocational schools will no longer have final papers; secondary vocational schools will still retain graduation papers. The amendment also makes changes to admissions to university entrance exams for school-trained applicants, such as universities, who are required to take a graduation exam. You can now start two years earlier than before, at age 20 instead of 22.
Not approved by the opposition parties
Petra Tanzler (SPÖ) criticized a “happy” campaign shortly before the National Council elections. Some of the approaches proposed in the package might be seen as positive, but they don’t want to agree to a quick passage. Tanzler said the SPÖ had long pointed out the need to reform the graduation exams, but suggestions in this regard had been rejected and now there were “hasty changes”. Hermann Brückl (FPÖ) discovers that the digital student ID card is not a major innovation.
