Ovidio Guzmán López, son of Joaquín ‘el Chapo’ Guzmán Loera, was extradited this Friday from Mexico to the United States to be prosecuted by the Federal Court for drug trafficking, confirmed the Department of Justice of that country.
“Today, as a result of police cooperation between the United States and Mexico, Ovidio Guzmán López, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, was extradited to the United States. “This action is the latest step in the Department of Justice’s effort to target all aspects of the cartel’s operations,” said a statement from Attorney General Merrick B. Garland.
Guzmán López, 33 years old, was removed this day from the Federal Social Readaptation Center Number 1 El Altiplano, located in Almoloya de Juárez, in the State of Mexico, for extradition purposes.
The information was released by journalist Carlos Jiménez, who said that the son of ‘El Chapo’ was taken from the federal prison by Interpol elements, and transferred by helicopter to the city of Chicago.
Guzmán, alias ‘El Ratón’, was arrested for the second time in January of this year during an operation in Culiacán, in which there were shootouts with deaths and injuries.
The ‘Mouse’ had been detained in Culiacán by the Mexican authorities on October 17, 2019. However, given the violent reaction of the Sinaloa Cartel, the Government decided to release him.
The son of Joaquín ‘el Chapo’ Guzmán is one of the leaders of a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel that is in conflict with the cell led by Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada.
In July 2015, his father, ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, escaped from the maximum security prison of El Altiplano.
On January 8, 2016, the then leader of the Sinaloa Cartel was arrested once more and a year later he was extradited to the United States, where he is serving a life sentence for drug trafficking.
