When we talk regarding cloud providers, our thoughts spontaneously go to the US and Chinese giants, but in a global top 10 that closely resembles the line-up in the battle for the economic supremacy of the planet, OVH Cloud stands out as the only European presence. Recognized by IDC as a “Major Player”, thanks to its very well-balanced offer and a clear vision of the evolution of the market it manages to carve out an important space for itself, demonstrating that offering technology on our continent is a complex but manageable challenge. Demonstrating that foresight is important, the recent acquisition of gridscale by OVHCloud now allows the company to focus strongly on the edge cloud or the creation of local data centers capable of providing high performance in terms of latency and privacy, a sector in which analysts predict great growth margins.
The first two local data centers are already available in Madrid and Brussels (ISO/IEC 27001 certified, complemented by specific ISO/IEC 27017 requirements for the security of cloud services and ISO/IEC 27018 for the protection of personal data), but others will follow 5 in Europe (Milan, Prague, Marseille, Amsterdam and Zurich) and six in the USA to reach 15 in total by the end of the year. The Italian one will be available before the summer and will allow the provision of cloud services to a whole series of companies that have very strict policies on the geographical management of data, with particular reference to the financial, banking and government sectors.
While the edge cloud markets will be developed, OVHCloud also continues to place high regard on the most advanced technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence and quantum computing. To support enterprise adoption of AI, OVHCloud has a very broad range of services ranging from model training to data generation, with a strong partnership with nVidia that guarantees power and flexibility.
Quantum computing, on the other hand, is still in the preliminary phase, but their intention is to be able to do with quantum computing what has been done with the cloud and artificial intelligence: democratize it. Even though there are still several technological steps to be taken, in the future this advanced processing system will be sold “as a service” to anyone who needs it.
However, the support for companies dealing with Space is already effective as, according to OVHCloud, they represent the ideal testing ground for their services and products. A collaboration with ESA aims to release a platform open to all scientists active in this field, providing a valid work and collaboration tool to create innovation by leveraging the data that the European Space Agency collects in large quantities and which are today underutilized.
