Blizzard announced on the 14th that changes are coming that will bring new experiences to Overwatch 2 overall.

‘Season 9: Champions’ introduces a complete overhaul of competitive play and core gameplay updates. A variety of entertainment items suitable for the newly started season will also be introduced, such as Kyu Shinhwa skins, limited-time event modes, and new cosmetic items.

Major changes will be made to competitive play to reflect player feedback. This includes resetting competitive grades, reintroducing placement matches, applying a new progression system, and creating completely new competitive rewards and the highest level. It is part of the 2024 Overwatch 2 game development philosophy to provide players with greater intuitiveness and transparency regarding the competitive play experience and to make PvP gameplay more fun.

Starting on the 14th, all players’ ratings will be reset in fixed role and free competition. As significant changes will be added to the playing experience starting from the 9th season, this is to provide an opportunity to advance to a higher level than ever before.

The journey to the top begins with the placement match. As all players’ ratings have been reset, new ratings are given after 10 placement matches. You can check your predicted grade after completing each placement match.

The intuitiveness of the progress system is also maximized. In order to provide high transparency, breaking away from the existing method of adjusting the grade when 5 wins or 15 losses are accumulated, information on the rise and fall of progress in one’s skill level is provided in the form of a bar at the end of each game. Here, you can also look at adjustments that affected the previous game, such as consecutive wins/losses, come-from-behind wins, and disappointing losses.

A completely new competitive reward, the Jade Weapon variant, is also introduced. It is a reward that can be unlocked with 2024 competitive points earned through competitive play, providing a strong motivation for all players at all levels. Competitive points earned through Season 8 are converted into past competitive points and used to unlock existing golden weapon variants.

Meanwhile, Season 9: Champions will also feature fundamental gameplay updates that affect the majority of heroes, as well as a variety of cosmetic and play content created with the season’s theme.

Hitscan and movement time projectiles are adjusted to be larger, and the maximum health of all heroes is also increased.
