A total of 22 players can opt out of their contract by declining a player option this summer. Some have already done so, others have taken the option. Here is an overview of all decisions
We’ll start with the players who have already made a choice.
Draymond Green (Golden State Warriors) – Declined
Option: $27.5 million
Green is now on the open market for the first time in his career following adviser Rich Paul announced that the forward would not exercise his option. New Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. recently announced that the Dubs are desperate to keep the four-time champion. And of course there is also interest from the Greens.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski (ESPN), both parties want to make a deal. The big question will be how long Green’s new contract will be. According to Woj, there is a residual risk that Green will not sign, but Draymond would need help from the Warriors so that other contenders can approach the 33-year-old as only a sign-and-trade deal might be considered.
Fred VanVleet (Toronto Raptors) – Declined
Option: $22.8 million
It was to be expected that the guard would not exercise his option, but a return to Toronto is said to be possible. According to Michael Scotto (HoopsHype), VanVleet wants to make at least 30 million a year. The 29-year-old has been linked with the Los Angeles Lakers, but the Houston Rockets are also said to be an option if VanVleet decides once morest a Toronto return.
Gary Trent Jr. (Toronto Raptors) – gezogen
Option: $18.6 million
Trent’s decision came as a surprise as many expected the shooting guard to leave. Instead, according to Chris Haynes (Bleacher Report), Trent Jr. wants to stay and possibly sign a new long-term contract in Toronto this summer.
Kyle Kuzma (Washington Wizards) – Declined
Option: $13.0 million
It was to be expected that Kuzma would drop out. On the open market, the forward should get significantly more, plus everything points to a rebuild in Washington following Bradley Beal’s trade to Phoenix. Nevertheless, Wojnarowski reports that a return to Washington is possible.
Danilo Gallinari (Boston Celtics) – gezogen
Option: $6.8 million
That’s no surprise either. Gallinari hasn’t played a single game for Boston due to a cruciate ligament rupture, so it makes perfect sense for the Italian to take the nearly $7 million next season with him.
Otto Porter Jr. (Toronto Raptors) – drawn
Option: $6.3 million
The situation is similar for Porter Jr., who only played eight games for the Raptors and already exercised his option for the upcoming season in April. The forward underwent left foot surgery in January and it’s unclear when Porter will even be able to return to the field.
Daniel House Jr. (Philadelphia 76ers) – retired
Option: $4.3 million
House was in the Sixers’ rotation for most of the season, but he didn’t excel at higher roles, making it unrealistic for him to get more in free agency. The logical consequence: He pulled his option for 4.3 million dollars
Damian Jones (Utah Jazz) – retired
Option: $2.6 million
Kudos to the agent who actually negotiated an option for Jones last summer. The 27-year-old is at best a backup center and hardly played a role even following the trade to the Utah Jazz, although he always shows good approaches.
