Overseas nuclear power plant for the first time in 13 years, “10 units exported”, but an uncertain future

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power has won the Egyptian nuclear power plant construction project.

Since winning the UAE nuclear power plant project in 2009, it is the first overseas nuclear power plant order in 13 years, and the government has set a goal of exporting 10 nuclear power plants by 2030.

However, the prospects are unclear, and even if they win a contract, it is said that calculating the balance is a problem.

El Dava, a city on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt.

A Russian company has won an order from the Egyptian Atomic Energy Agency to build four 1.2 gigawatt nuclear power plants.

Korea is also participating in this project.

The project that Korea won was 3 trillion won out of the total 40 trillion won.

Since it was subcontracted by a Russian company, core businesses such as nuclear reactors were omitted.

This is a secondary business that mainly builds buildings and supplies equipment.

Private companies such as Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and Doosan Energy have been preparing to win business orders five years ago.

It was selected as the sole negotiator at the end of last year, but it was delayed due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the contract was concluded this time.

“It will play a big role in revitalizing the domestic nuclear power plant ecosystem because it participates with many domestic companies.”

The Yun Seok-yeol administration, which has been critical of the last government to phase out nuclear power, has set a goal of exporting 10 nuclear power plants by 2030.

We entered competition for orders in the Czech Republic, Poland and Saudi Arabia.

But the outlook is uncertain.

Russia dominates the world nuclear power plant export market, and it is known that it promises huge financial support and even the disposal of spent nuclear fuel.

During the Lee Myung-bak administration, following winning the UAE nuclear power plant project, the goal was to export 80 units, but for 13 years following that, nothing was achieved.

“In 2010, we exported 80 units by 2030, but suddenly it was reduced to 10 units. The export target. The global nuclear power plant export market has drastically decreased…”

Even if you actually win a contract, the balance of money is a problem.

Japan’s Mitsubishi, which won the Turkiye nuclear power plant project, gave up the project three years ago due to skyrocketing construction costs.

Hitachi also won the UK nuclear power plant project, but eventually gave up on the project following losing 3 trillion won.
