By 2023, India’s population will exceed that of China, which is expected to decline by 31.4 million by 2050.
It is common knowledge that China is the most populous country in the world with its 1.44 billion inhabitants. However, by 2023, India is expected to top the global rankings, according to data released Monday by the United Nations (UN), on the occasion of World Population Day.
According to the same source, China and India, with its 1.39 billion inhabitants, represent, respectively, 19 and 18% of the world’s population. However, in 2023, China’s population is expected to decline by 31.4 million, or regarding 2.2%, between 2019 and 2050.
In addition, the world population is expected to reach 8 billion on November 15, said the World population prospects 2022 report, noting that the growth rate is at its lowest level since 1950, having fallen below 1% in 2020.
“It is a reminder of our shared responsibility to take care of our planet and to reflect on the areas where we still fall short of our commitments to each other,” said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
Note that the world population might reach 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and peak at 10.4 billion in the 2080s.
“Today, two-thirds of the world’s population live in a country or area where lifetime fertility is below 2.1 births per woman, roughly the level required for long-term zero growth to a low-mortality population,” the UN report said. It specifies that the population of 61 countries or areas is expected to decline by 1% or more between 2022 and 2050, due to the persistence of low fertility rates and, in some cases, high emigration rates.
