You always hear that the music business is a very fast-moving one. Bands appear and disappear once more. What remains from many ascensions are old articles and reviews in music magazines gathering dust on shelves.

On the other hand there is a band like Overlord, who following their formation in the mid-1980s only made it to one EP and two study albums and are still present in the back of many people’s minds. So they still exist, the bands that leave deep impressions on the fans.

The US veterans achieved this in 1985 with their self-titled EP and, to everyone’s delight, suddenly came out with the great one in 2004 Return of the Snow Giant returned. The footprints seem huge in the Overlord at the end of 2023 Awaken The Fury step. Actually, the level can only be maintained and hardly exceeded.

The swords still sparkle

What regarding your loved ones following twenty years? Overlord remained? From a purely visual perspective, the cover artwork adheres to the style of its predecessor and the lyrics still celebrate fantasy, heroism and battles. But acoustically there are differences to be heard. That’s no surprise, as only the guitarist remains from the previous album Mark Edwards and John Bunucci am Bass mit an Board.

Both support the new singer with their background vocals George Tsalikis. He’s probably familiar to some of you with his solo albums and, despite the fact that he’s different vocally from his predecessor Bobby Lucas deviates, its good. The second new man is the drummer Geroge of Janeirowho, as far as I know, hasn’t appeared with any band yet.

Quick start with clearly assigned roles

But the personnel position is one thing and the acoustic result is the other part of the balance. The band gets off to a great start with the title song Awaken The Fury and the fast one Fire In The Skywhich you HERE can listen.

What is striking over the course of the album is that the guitarist Mark Edwards recorded and produced disc assigns clear, almost rigid positions to the instruments. On the left the defined sounding bass, on the right the humming lead guitar. In between there are singers and drums. When the solo comes, the guitar moves to the middle. This focus on bass and guitar pushes vocals and drums into the background. You have to think of it like that Overlord wanted to accept, but also like.

How do the Americans currently sound in direct comparison to their predecessor? Return of the Snow Giant? Awaken The Fury The speakers no longer sound quite as powerful and powerful. The material sounds more convoluted, which is why the listener needs a few listens to grasp the songs. That’s why I always have the most fun when Overlord storm forward powerfully like at the beginning of the album or stomp away properly. That’s why I like the mid-tempo numbers Destroy Us All, Ashes and Hammer Strike well caught in the middle section.

Conclusion
Overlord still offer us official power metal. But the current album seems more convoluted, more pounding and no longer as impetuous as its predecessor. The Americans deliver Awaken The Fury still doing well, but can’t overcome the high bar of expectations. 7 / 10
