Shortened trains and overcrowding in the carriages. Caroline, a resident of Lincent, goes to Landen station every morning to reach her workplace. Since the start of the school year, she has become annoyed by a situation which, according to her, is getting worse.
“When it’s not stress because the train is late, we arrive at the station and the platform is crowded with people. We argue regarding getting on the train because we know we’re not going to be seated. The situation annoys me. Since the start of the school year, several of us have been subjected to this. At some point, we can’t take it anymore“, she testifies.
Caroline does not understand the reduction in the number of carriages, which causes overcrowding on trains and a lack of space for passengers.
“On Monday, September 18, for example, it was a disaster and the same the next day. People find themselves in first class even though we know we can’t go. But we don’t want to go there. find yourself standing for an hour on the train even though it is 6 a.m. We are sometimes told on the platform, ‘there will only be 5 cars instead of 11, sorry…'”, she says. “We are all piled on top of each other, and everyone is complaining. I understand that those who pay extra to be in first class are also complaining, because they are undoubtedly paying to have more peace and quiet and to be comfortable comfortable. And there, we all find ourselves crowded together.”
Caroline lives 50 minutes from her workplace. She takes the 6:54 a.m. train to Landen. Taking the next one would not change anything in her situation according to her. “We are asking for more wagons. We are told to take the next train, which is 7 minutes later, but I have already done that. It’s the same problem, it is crowded. We should be there in the morning, at 6:50 a.m. , to see the number of people who fit into five wagons”, she adds, frustrated. “This has apparently been going on for a long time. People complain and receive in response from SNCB that they can benefit from first class seats.”
And to conclude: “It’s no longer possible, this has to change. I pay 300 euros for a train subscription per month to be on my feet, cramped and stressed… We have to find solutions. In one minus, that’s at least six times that it happens like that. It’s not happy. In the morning, we like to be quiet, and not to be piled on top of each other and fighting for a place. Seeing elderly people standing during a hour, or a pregnant person standing, that’s not okay either.”
Why remove cars from this train line? In general, is there monitoring to prevent trains from being crowded?
Elisa Roux, the SNCB spokesperson, responds briefly: “We are aware of the situation and we apologize for the inconvenience caused to travelers. We are doing everything we can to provide solutions.”
