Died in 2015 in a helicopter accident on the set of the show “Dropped” in Argentina, Florence Arthaud, who is the subject of a biopic in theaters on November 1, experienced a tumultuous life. Here are five tragedies that the sailor managed to overcome as best she might.

His terrible road accident

In 1974, the daughter of Jacques Arthaud, director of the publishing house of the same name, came close to death. At just 17 years old, she was the victim of a terrible car accident which plunged her into a deep coma, following her vehicle rolled over seven times. The one who suffered in particular from brain hematomas stayed six months in Garches hospital, and spent a total of two years convalescing. But while the doctors told her that she would never be able to play sports once more, Florence Arthaud proved the opposite. From this accident, she left some scars, including one below her right eye.

Her miscarriage during the Route du Rhum

If in 1990, she became the first woman to win the Route du Rhum aboard the trimaran “Pierre 1er” in 14 days, 10 hours, 8 minutes and 28 seconds, the outcome might have been totally different for Florence Arthaud. On the open sea, the one nicknamed “the little bride of the Atlantic” began to lose a lot of blood. On arrival, she said it was a simple hemorrhage. In reality, she had a miscarriage. The sportswoman fought back her tears and finished the race to a victory in Pointe-à-Pitre.

The tragic death of his older brother

In her posthumous story, “Tonight, the sea is black”, published in 2015, Florence Arthaud wrote: “I have lost very dear friends, but no pain will match that of the loss of my brother Jean-Marie “. These two, both sailors, were very close. The sadness was immense when this older brother decided to end his life in 2001, at the age of 45, on his boat off the coast of Antibes.

The disappearance at sea of Loïc Caradec

The 1986 edition of the Route du Rhum was marked by tragedy. Competing for this legendary race, Florence Arthaud made the decision to divert to help the navigator Loïc Caradec who, a few hours earlier, had made a distress call. If the “Royale”, a 26 meter long catamaran, was spotted overturned, “Flo” did not see the Frenchman on the wreck or on board his survival boat. The search was abandoned to find the 38-year-old skipper, who probably sank off the coast of the Azores archipelago.

His shipwreck off Cap Corse

While she was sailing alone off the coast of Cap Corse, Florence Arthaud fell into the sea in the middle of the night in 2011. Fortunately for her, the sailor was equipped with a headlamp and above all, she was able to count on her waterproof cell phone with which she was able to call her mother, who contacted Florence Arthaud’s brother. Thanks to the mobile’s geolocation, she was found in a state of hypothermia and airlifted to Bastia hospital.
