Overcoming Obstacles: The Future of Electric Cars in Morocco | Al Sharq Analysis

In Morocco, the rate of sales of electric cars still remains very low, analyzes the newspaper Al Sharq, noting three major obstacles to the development of this sector, namely: the weak incentive from the government, the high price of vehicles and the insufficiency of stations recharge.

The incentives offered for the purchase of an electric car are low, confirms the president of the Association of Car Importers in Morocco, Adil Bennani, quoted by the same newspaper, noting that the exemption from the annual tax on electric vehicles cannot compensate for their high prices compared to other cars.

The high prices of these vehicles compared to those offered in European and Asian countries do not encourage Moroccans to purchase them, confides an electric car owner. As for the insufficiency of charging stations on the highways between cities, this prevents the use of electric vehicles for long journeys, underlines Bennani.

Morocco currently has nearly 200 charging stations for electric car batteries. The association led by Bennani is working to increase this number to 2,500 stations. The kingdom sold 463 electric vehicles in 2023, an increase of 133% compared to 2022.
