Guillermo Pluym, a 30-year-old Belgian from Zonnebeke, Flanders, has what we call bad luck. After suffering a serious theft, the death of one of his employees and unforeseen expenses for renovation work, the contractor’s van has just been destroyed by a drunk driver.

Fortunately, Guillermo was able to count on the help of his colleagues in all his troubles. “I’m very happy that people helped me, but the setback might be reversed now,” he confided in the columns of HLN.

It was following losing his job in catering due to Covid that Guillermo created his business called “Woodness”. “When you are used to working all week and suddenly you can’t do anything anymore, you look for something to continue working,” explains the Belgian.

“Woodness” is an online catering store mainly for parties. Not only the end of year holidays, but also Mother’s and Father’s Day, for example. “We offer personalized menus to reheat at home. I also run a food bar Monday to Friday. Everyone is welcome,” says Guillermo, who also specializes in weddings, communions and birthdays. “We take care of everything, from meals to DJ and video. So I actually have three companies under one name,” he says.

“The hotel industry is a big family”

And last weekend, a problem was added to all the previous ones. His van was wrecked by a drunk driver. “I had two parties on Saturday: a birthday in Kortrijk and a wedding in Ghent. After the accident, my first thought was to cancel these parties. But that would have been a disaster for customers. Imagine that right before your wedding, the caterer suddenly cancels. No, I mightn’t do that,” Guillermo explains once more.

After thinking carefully, the Belgian turned to his friend Gregory, from the Koklikoo bistro. “I called Gregory in the night and asked if he might help me find an oven. He had an old one still standing that I might use,” he testifies. Guillermo also called on the Vandekerckhove company to have a van to loan.

Thanks to the help he received, Guillermo was fortunately able to carry out his weekend events. “I am very happy to be able to count on my colleagues and I have already bought flowers for them. The local hotel industry is a big family,” adds the Belgian.

And Guillermo has felt like he’s been “haunted by bad luck” lately. “I invested a lot in my business and when we renovated it here, it turned out that the electricity was too weak for all the equipment. So we had to install a new power cable, which cost me 9,000 euros. Then, I had to deal with a theft of expensive wines and champagnes,” says the entrepreneur.

But the worst was to come, since Guillermo then learned of the tragic death of an employee. “I then learned of the death of one of my ‘flexi-jobbers’ in Italy. It’s a great loss, because we might really count on her,” he says.
