When Instagram came up with an alternative to Twitter, 100 million people opened an account within a week. But more than half of them no longer use the service, Meta director Mark Zuckerberg said in a meeting with employees on Thursday.
“Ideally, if more than 100 million people sign up, everyone sticks around,” Zuckerberg said. “Or even half. But we’re not there yet.”
According to Archyde.com Meta’s top is satisfied with how many people are active on the service, although Zuckerberg calls it “not perfect”. It is unknown exactly how many active users there are on Threads.
It is normal for people to drop out, according to Zuckerberg. He expects more people to sign up and return as more positions are added. We are working on that. For the short term, the Twitter competitor can expect a web version and a more extensive search function.
Instagram released Threads early this month, right during one of the chaotic moments at Twitter (which is now being rebranded as brand X). It gained Threads millions of users in no time.
European users not yet welcome
Threads is not yet available in Europe. This has to do with a new law, the Digital Markets Act, which imposes strict rules on large tech companies. One of the rules is that tech companies are not allowed to simply reuse user information in other apps. This is done by linking an Instagram account to the Threads app.
For a short time it was possible for Europeans to create a Threads account with a detour. It is not known how many people have done that. Threads has now put a stop to it and European accounts can no longer post messages.
