Officials in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh say the death toll from a stampede at a religious gathering on Tuesday has risen to 97.
“We have confirmed 97 deaths and at the moment our focus is on providing medical aid to the victims,” Chitra V, divisional commissioner of Aligarh city in Uttar Pradesh, told AFP.
Earlier, the senior medical officer of the state of Uttar Pradesh told the news agency AFP that ‘we have received 27 bodies so far, more bodies are being brought.’
A large number of people had gathered in the city of Hathras, regarding 140 km from New Delhi, to celebrate the Hindu deity Shiva.

According to AFP, Chief Medical Officer Umesh Kumar Tripathi told reporters that “the dead include 25 women and two men.”
He says, ‘The main cause of these deaths is the stampede during the religious gathering.’ He further informed that several injured have been admitted to hospitals.
