There have been large amounts of rainfall that hit the Bø area from midnight until the afternoon on Monday. At 5 p.m. the rain started to let up.
– There has been about 80 millimeters of rain, says state meteorologist Eldbjørg Moxnes to NTB.
The police reported this afternoon that the Bø river was about to overflow its banks, which led, among other things, to a bridge over Eikavegen collapsing.
– The fire service and Technical Agency in Midt-Telemark municipality are prepared to take care of critical infrastructure, informs the Sørøst police district.
From 6 p.m., however, the amount of water was decreasing, according to Norway’s Directorate of Water Resources and Energy (NVE).
The same area may experience torrential rain
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued a warning for torrential rain for large parts of Eastern Norway on Tuesday. There will be local showers in the afternoon.
Moxnes says the showers can hit areas that have received large amounts of water on Monday, but that it is difficult to predict exactly where the showers will hit.
– We can hope that they do not end up exactly there, but it is not easy to say in advance, says the state meteorologist.
The showers can make driving challenging.
– It might be good to be a little careful tomorrow afternoon, if the torrential rain comes where you are. There can be heavy showers which can be uncomfortable when driving, says Moxnes.
A lot of rainfall can lead to a lot of water in the road, and the risk of aquaplaning.
Underwater campsites
The flood has led to a number of consequences for the local population. The police reported at 15.14 about a house that was about to topple over due to rainfall and water from waterways. The house is a building with two floors and a basement.
– The house is on an incline, operations manager Øystein Ølen in Sørøst 110 central told NTB in the afternoon.
Several campsites have also felt the flood closely. Beverøya camping was completely submerged, and the police therefore chose to evacuate the campsite.
At Åsgrav camping several caravans were partly under water, while on county road 3334 near Vreimsida parts of the road washed out.
Set crisis staff
Due to heavy rainfall, the Juvsåa bridge has been closed with immediate effect, Midt-Telemark municipality states on its website.
– This means that both the pedestrian and cycle path and the carriageway are closed, the municipality stated.
Municipal crisis management was notified early, and the road traffic center was informed. The police eventually deployed a police helicopter to get an overview of the situation.
Midt-Telemark municipality reports on its website that a crisis staff has been set up.
– No further rainfall has been reported today, but there will be more tomorrow, writes the municipality.
