The situation remains tense on many American university campuses, following police intervened at the University of California, where they removed students demonstrating once morest the war in Gaza.
Incidents occurred at the universities of Oregon and New Hampshire, with arrests totaling more than 2,100. Tensions are rising in Canada and Australia, while in Paris police entered the prestigious Institute of Political Science and removed 70 pro-Palestinian students without incident.
The student movement is spreading to at least 21 US states, despite police crackdowns and mass arrests that now exceed 2,100 since the demonstrations began on April 18, as protesters call on the US president to reverse his stance on the war in Gaza.
In fact, the events of Thursday at the University of California and the scenes that unfolded during the violent dismantling of the occupation and the arrest of hundreds of protesters are causing intense debate.
“I was on the front line, the policemen hit me with their clubs, grabbed me. I didn’t resist them, but they grabbed me,” said Kew Ryan, a protester.
Meanwhile, following days of criticism and pressure, the US president broke his silence on Thursday, acknowledging the protesters’ right to protest but condemning the violence.
“There is the right to protest, but not the right to cause chaos. There is the right to education. At graduation. There is no place for hate speech, for any act of violence, for anti-Semitic Islamophobia or discrimination,” said Joe Biden, among others.
However, other countries remain in the “dance” of mobilizations. In France, police removed without incident regarding 70 students who had occupied the Institute of Political Studies in Paris.
In Mexico, hundreds of students camped outside the National Autonomous University, expressing their support for the American movement.
Mobilizations are also taking place at Universities in Canada and Australia, but also in Britain, Switzerland and Spain.
