Around half of the 215 confirmed dead are children, while more than 400 people have been injured, according to Pakistan’s emergency agency.
Most of the deaths were recorded in the central province of Punjab, followed by the northwestern region of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, an update from the agency said.
Rescue workers are still struggling to drain the water from flooded towns, says official Sheikh Uzair.
With the help of boats, rescue workers have transported people from the southern cities of Sukkur and Larkana to dry land as large floods have swept through several neighborhoods. The rain is the heaviest in the country in seven years, says Uzair.
The authorities are still on high alert in Karachi, where work is being done to remove floodwater from the streets. The province is home to more than 20 million inhabitants, and more rain is expected in the next 24 hours, according to Karachi’s Information Minister Sharjeel Memon.
According to chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz, the heavy rain will continue across the country until August 25.
Over 2,000 people lost their lives as a result of floods and subsequent diseases in Pakistan in 2022, when a third of the South Asian country was under water.
