“We exceeded 100,000 registrations in the postal vote. 100,000 Greek citizens living either in Greece or in 114 other countries were registered to vote in the next European elections through postal voting, i.e. via courier that they will send to the competent judicial committees. If you want to vote from your home in the next European elections, whether you live in Greece or abroad, you can register at epistoliki.ypes.gov.gr until Holy Monday, April 29”, says Niki Kerameos.
The issue of the postal vote was discussed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Gerapetritis and the Minister of the Interior Niki Kerameos, as they participated on Thursday, April 18, in a teleconference with the heads of Greek Embassies and Consular Authorities abroad.
The two Ministers thanked the Ambassadors and Consuls for their key contribution to this top democratic process through, on the one hand, the information they offer to expatriate Greeks and on the other hand the support they provide for their registration on the epistoliki.ypes.gov.gr platform.
The momentum of registrations on the postal voting platform was highlighted, in which, in just two months of operation, more than 100,000 voters from 115 different countries around the world have been registered.
In particular, it is worth noting that registered Greeks abroad have exceeded 30,000, a number that significantly exceeds that of expatriate Greeks who exercised their right to vote in the 2023 parliamentary elections.
Equally noteworthy is the fact that in 80 of the 115 countries from which those registered to date on the electronic platform come, no polling station had been set up for the parliamentary elections of 2023, as the required number provided by the electoral law had not been completed legislation. This is the first time that all Greeks, regardless of their place of residence, are given the opportunity to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming European elections, without having to go to Greece or to Embassies and Consulates of the Hellenic Republic. In this way, a long-standing demand of Diaspora Hellenism is satisfied for decades.
Greeks abroad vote only by postal vote
It is underlined that Greek residents abroad can exercise their right to vote in the upcoming European elections exclusively through postal voting. It is reminded that the registrations continue on the electronic platform epistoliki.ypes.gov.gr until M. Monday, April 29 and the process is extremely simple and short.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Gerapetritis emphasized that “The European elections are not a luxury election. It is an election that affects our future. Postal voting is a form of strengthening universal suffrage and Democracy in the country and gives Hellenism in the diaspora the opportunity to strengthen its voice”.
For her part, the Minister of the Interior, Niki Kerameos, stated “The positive response of the Greek electorate to the institution of postal voting moves us and makes us particularly happy. Every Greek citizen who is facilitated in exercising the right to vote through postal voting is a gain for the Republic. We sincerely thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our Diplomatic and Consular Authorities for their contribution to this crucial project.”
