According to a Meteo study, the surface temperature of the Greek seas has risen by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius in the last 30 years,
The study was published in the journal Atmosphere by the Meteo scientists of the National Observatory of Athens and had as its subject the trends of basic climate parameters in Greece in the period 1991-2020. The study concerned the changing trends of temperature, precipitation, and the temperature of the Greek seas over the last thirty years. The analyzed data comes from the European Copernicus service.
Regarding sea surface temperature, there is an increasing trend of change in the average sea surface temperature in the last 30 years from 1991 to 2020, while the trend for the temperatures in the Greek seas is similar.
On average and for all of our seas, the temperature increase is about 1.5 °C over the last 30 years.
However, this increase shows geographical differences. More specifically, in many areas mainly of the Thracian Sea, the Central Ionian but also in sea areas south of Crete and Rhodes, the increasing trend reaches and exceeds 2 °C within the last 30 years.
On the contrary, in areas of the Central and South Aegean, the trend of increase is much smaller.
