OVCS documented more than 1,300 protests in Venezuela during the month of July

The Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict (OVCS) confirmed on Friday, August 23, that 1,311 protests were recorded during July 2024 in Venezuela, equivalent to 44 demonstrations per day.

According to the organization, the figure represents an increase of 219% compared to July 2023, when 411 protests were reported.

Likewise, 70% of the rallies occurred between July 29 and 30, 2024, after the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Nicolás Maduro the winner of the July 28 presidential elections.

“The results of the presidential elections sparked a wave of protests across the country, mainly in poor areas, demanding transparency and the delivery of the electoral records,” reads the report published by the OVCS.

Details of the July 2024 protests

Of the 1,311 protests, at least 1,177 (90% of the total) were to demand civil and political rights from the State. The OVCS counted 134 protests related to requests for economic, social, cultural and environmental rights.

The agency also determined that between July 29 and 30, 915 citizen demonstrations took place throughout the country, of which 138 were repressed with tear gas and firearms by state security officials and armed civilians, known as colectivos.

Following this attack, at least 24 people were killed and more than 749 were arrested, according to statements by the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab.

“There was an increase in violence and repression as a result of the authorities’ calls for the activation of the so-called Bolivarian Fury.

In addition to this, the OVCS reported dozens of digital blocks and restrictions on news portals and applications. streaming, which made access to information and the dissemination of protests difficult.

Combined protests

Of the 1,311 demonstrations documented during July, 375 were combined, in which more than one right was demanded in the same event, which represents 29% of the total recorded.

“This data is relevant to understanding people’s behavior when they make their demands, requests and complaints during protests,” the organization added.

Nearly 100 arrested during July protests

On July 31, 2024, Foro Penal confirmed that during three days of protests, state security forces arrested 95 people across the country.

However, this figure currently stands at 1,674 detainees, according to the report published by the NGO on Friday, August 23. Among those detained are 107 minors, 216 women and 155 military personnel.
