Nicknamed ‘Amarena’, this bear is one of only 60 Marsican brown bears left.

Moreover, this endangered brown bear has a relatively docile personality and does not show aggression towards humans, so residents regard it as a mascot representing the region and a symbol of coexistence.

However, on the night of the 31st of last month, Amarena died after being shot by a man near Abruzzo National Park.

The man, who was handed over to police, said he shot the bear in fear and did not intend to kill it.

Earlier, just a few days before her death, Amarena became a hot topic when she was seen walking through the village with two bear cubs while residents watched.

For this reason, it is said that comments containing anger and sadness about the news of this death are pouring on local social media.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service judges that Amarena’s pups are too young to survive alone, and is looking for them, but their whereabouts are unknown.
