Tesla is increasingly standing out in the automotive sector. Proof of this is that the automaker’s Model Y was the best-selling car in the first quarter of 2023, surpassing even Toyota’s famous Corolla in the period. The information comes from the market research company JATO Dynamics through the Motor1 news agency.
According to the publication, Tesla Model Y sales grew 69% in the first three months of 2023 compared to 2022, totaling 267,200 units leaving dealerships around the world in the period.
The top 5 ranking of best-selling cars in the world at the beginning of 2023 is as follows:
- Tesla Model Y: 267,200 units
- Toyota Corolla: 256,400 units
- Toyota Hilux: 214,700 units
- Toyota RAV4: 211,000 units
- Toyota Camry: 166,200 units
The company says Model Y sales have grown a lot in several regions, most notably China, while US sales have grown 68% year-on-year and the midsize EV SUV has become the best-selling car in Europe.
This is an impressive achievement for Tesla, as it is still not one of the top ten automakers in the world, according to a survey by Car Logos, where the company ranked 19th in 2022.
Despite this, Elon Musk already predicted these results before the vehicle was launched, as he said in an interview in 2021 that the Model Y would become the best-selling car in the world the following year. Although he got the year wrong, the Tesla Model Y ranked third in 2022, second only to two Japanese Toyota models.
