The cold is not what scares the students of a nursery school in Saint-Vaast, in Hainaut. Every morning, they have class in the woods. Even when it’s -4 degrees like this Tuesday. They are equipped for, and even learn from, it.
It was in an unusual learning place that, this Tuesday morning, students from the Saint-Vaast nursery school, in Hainaut, had lessons at -4°C: in the woods. To supervise the children, there were Madame Marie-Laurence and Madame Anne. And it was particularly important to ensure that the students were well dressed. “I put on 6 layers, with a t-shirt, a shirt, a big coat, another big coat and this one”a little girl tells us, pointing to all her clothes. “I have a t-shirt and a coat”said another student in the class.
“They absolutely do not suffer from the temperature”reassures Madame Marie-Laurence, teacher at the free basic school of Sait-Vaast. “The weak point is the hands and that’s why we ask for hand warmers and two pairs of gloves”she adds.
For 2.5 hours, the 20 kindergarten students will live, like every day, the experience of school from outside. In the middle of the woods, we play and learn, even when it’s freezing! “I like climbing trees, I like making cabins, I like making houses out of leaves”enthuses a little boy.
“Children, they go out, they toughen up, they become immunized… For their health, they develop naturally and they are much more resistant and much more robust”explains Madame Marie-Laurence.
And in terms of teaching this morning, it is the freezing of water that is being studied. The intense cold in the middle of nature allows you to learn a lot of things. “Frost is all the states of water, it’s nature, it’s noises, it’s what leaves crunch under our feet, it’s the mud where we no longer know how to wade inside, but it became very hard and very intense”continues the teacher.
From tomorrow, these students will return to this unique class for an outside school which takes place every day, except in the event of a ban on attendance at parks and slag heaps.
