Out of the Heart of Darkness: L.A. Edwards’ Melodic and Honest Rock Album

No, Mr. Edwards’ first name isn’t Los Angeles, even though LA suggests it is. Instead, they are the initials of Luke Andrew Edwards. Considering the band is from California it’s not that out of place either. Nevertheless, it was very considerate not to put one’s first name (or names) in the foreground, because Jesse Daniel and Jerry Edwards also play in this family production. As a trio, they have one goal above all: they want to rock! And that in their own way, which is characterized by amazing clarity and melodiousness, but still picks up the pace and goes well forward.

Speaking of names: It’s already been mentioned that it rocks, but the one mentioned in the album title Darkness remains – despite the anxious boy who Prelude speaks – basically right there, namely in the title. That gives you right at the beginning Little Boy Blue recognizable, which shows how good rock music can sound even if you use the distortion a little more discreetly and put something like melody in the voice. And yet it is clearly rock music, without one suspecting that a hit recipe is being sought here, that it is softened or something similar, which some people may quickly think of. But what you hear here sounds far too honest for that.

In terms of dynamics and general variety, there is quite a bit to do in the episode. A Let It Out For example, it has a trace of melancholy and opens a bit more subdued, but later increases to a veritable rock number with catchy piano runs. Strongly tightened in turn Hi Rite Now!which starts with a beat and cheerful major sounds and describes precisely this high that is also included in the title „Hi“ is abbreviated. The following Stick To You on the other hand, shows the soulful side of LA Edwards in the mid-tempo area. This facet also suits the band well and fits well into the overall picture, which is otherwise predominantly rocky.

That’s how the album ends Lucky One then too and you have an appealing rock album of the more melodic kind behind you. After the almost 40 minutes one would have liked to hear one or two more tracks, but that’s the notorious needle in the haystack once more, because above all the album turned out pretty good!
