The Finnish company Oura is suing three other smart ring manufacturers. They are said to have copied the app, but also sensors.
There are rumblings in the booming industry. Smart rings that measure fitness and health data are considered the next big thing following the smartwatch. Especially since Samsung announced in January that it would bring its own model onto the market this year.
The Finnish company Oura brought its ring onto the market in 2017 – as one of the first models. Today is a start-up Market leader – but also faced competition. And is now suing them.
In one Press release Oura announces that it will sue three other smart ring manufacturers for patent infringement. These are namely Ultrahuman, RingConn and Circular.
The lawsuit before the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) concerns the shape and construction of the ring and the Oura smartphone app. However, the manufacturer does not specify which patents are being infringed.
Ultrahuman is said to have poached employees
Oura had already sued the Indian manufacturer Ultrahuman in the fall. This copied the sensor for photoplethysmography – this is the measurement of changes in blood vessels. The sensors for blood oxygen saturation, heart rate and even the marketing strategy were simply adopted. This was because Ultrahuman had poached employees from Oura. And because internal information was passed on regarding a shareholder.
Oura Ring CEO Tom Hale says that innovations that move the industry forward are always welcome. But the company also has to protect its investments in research and development since it was founded in 2013.
The next big competition for Oura: Samsung wants to bring the Galaxy Ring onto the market this year.

By the way, Oura says nothing regarding the new competition from tech giant Samsung. Perhaps simply for the reason that the Samsung ring has only been shown publicly once so far, namely at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. And that Oura has not yet been able to investigate whether patents are also being violated here.
