ومُنح عاصم , Member of the British Empire in 2012 to honor him for his contribution to building ‘community harmony’ and interfaith communication, at Leeds.
On Wednesday, cinema chain Cineworld canceled all UK screenings of the film following protests outside a number of cinemas.
Asim, a lawyer and imam of the Mecca Mosque in Leeds, was told in a letter from the Department of Settlement, Housing and Communities that his appointment as deputy chair of the government’s anti-Muslim Hate Action Group must end.
“Your recent support for the Campaign to Restrict Freedom of Expression – a campaign that in itself has encouraged societal tensions – means that it is no longer appropriate for you to continue to work with government in roles designed to promote societal harmony,” the letter said.
The chancellor was told that his actions were a “clear attempt, to restrict artistic expression” and that the campaign “led to street protests that fueled religious hatred”.
On Monday, Asim wrote on Facebook: “We have worked with many brothers and imams across the country, to communicate with cinemas…Some imams have taken the viewpoint of protest and others are arguing with cinemas in an attempt to resolve the situation.”
And the letter continued: Resolving the situation, as you explained, means canceling the shows, I wrote that “in some places we succeeded and cinemas will no longer show the film.”

“This apparent participation in a campaign to limit freedom of expression runs counter to the role of the government advisor,” she said.
“You will undoubtedly see reports of scenes outside of various cinemas, including very disturbing videos, of sectarian chants and hatred once morest Shiites,” she added.
“As you know, anti-Shia hatred is a long-standing and very serious issue that must be challenged, at every opportunity, as part of a broader effort to combat anti-Muslim hatred,” the letter continued.
“We were disappointed to see that you failed to condemn some of the protests that were complicit in these behaviours,” she said.
