our first impressions after seeing the Sony A95K TV in action

After an official announcement at the CES show in Las Vegas last January, we were able to see the Sony XR-65A95K television in action during a demonstration session. The conditions being a little special, we were not able to get a complete idea of the final rendering, but enough all the same to offer you first impressions.

QD-OLED: our first impressions following seeing the Sony A95K TV in action

It was in the premises of Sony France that we were able to approach and see the new Sony XR-65A95K television with a diagonal of 65 inches. After a presentation of the full range to come for 2022, we were able to see some meaningful and comparative demonstrations between last year’s models and what should be the new benchmark in TV quality.

Sony, first to present a QD-OLED TV

The Sony XR-65A95K television is the first in the world to integrate the nouvelle dalle QD-OLED manufactured by Samsung Display. Announced as THE new display technology that offers both the advantages of OLED for the quality of its blacks, but also those of Quantum Dots panels for color rendering, it is promising a brighter image and more a wider color palette than with a conventional OLED panel for a more precise desired scene. For Samsung, it’s a return to a technology that the company had left aside to focus on the quantum dot and the mini-LED. But, under the impetus of Samsung Electronics vice-president Lee Jae-yong, the Samsung Display division has gone back to work producing this new type of panel, betting on the fact that it is a technology of the future, according to the South Korean group.

During the demonstration of the capabilities of the Sony XR-65A95K television, we were unable to detail the sub-pixels of the panel, but count on us to dissect it and explain it to you in detail during a complete test.

Here is the new, simpler remote control.

A brighter image in Vivid mode

Installed and placed on its foot, the Sony XR-65A95K television is slightly tilted, three degrees, backwards in order to offer optimal visual comfort, according to the brand. You can position the screen rather forward or slightly behind.

We got to see the TV playing a few scenes from Spider-Man: Far From Home, including when Peter Parker takes a city tour of Venice with his class. The sequences were played at the end of the morning in a room bathed in light and all the details were particularly visible there.

Then, we were able to attend a comparative demonstration in a room without lighting between the television Sony OLED A90J (OLED Evo panel) and the new Sony QD-OLED A95K. The two televisions were stuck on the Vivid or Intense picture mode, the brightest, but also the most flattering to show the differences in brightness between the two panels.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see the same scenes in Cinema mode which, a priori, would show less difference in brightness. Under the conditions offered by Sony, we can effectively say that the QD-OLED TV keeps its promise of a brighter image than last year’s series.

In addition, we might also see the presence of a higher dynamic range on the new panel. The colors appear more intense and the image appears slightly sharper. These observations were made for a relatively short time and only by eye. Further tests, but also and above all in different image modes, will certainly confirm our first impressions which are quite good. It must be recognized, however, that the gap between the technologies of last year and 2022 is not as great as one might have thought to hear the marketing discourse around the new televisions with a QD-OLED panel.

It remains to know the price of the Sony XR-65A95K television and the other diagonals knowing that the 65 inch A90J series was announced at 3800 euros when it was released. Sony has not yet communicated to us the prices that will be charged, but has guaranteed that they will be “reasonable ».
