Antonis Samaras spoke at the Plenary Session of the Parliament, in the context of the debate on the bill on “Equality in civil marriage, amendment of the Civil Code and other provisions”. The former prime minister outlined the ideological framework of his disagreements with the reform, which concerns same-sex couples.
“Today, just before an important conscience vote I will ask you to forget everything else and listen only to your conscience. Think regarding what you will vote for. The government does not feel threatened by the opposition, but this is not necessarily a good thing and does not mean that it is always right,” said Antonis Samaras initially.
Maximou on the fiery speech Samaras: No comment
And he continued by referring to Greek-Turkish, wondering if “is this a friendship pact?”, referring to the latest statements of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“Overconfidence can lead her to cut herself off from reality and society,” he commented, adding that “our faction should not have brought this bill to the floor.”
“Marriage of same-sex couples is not a human right. Marriage of same-sex couples is not compulsory. If a country wants to do it, if it wants not. So it starts with a lie. The whole argument in favor of voting for him has started from a lie.”
“The rights of same-sex couples are fully guaranteed by the cohabitation agreement. Marriage offers the right to procreate. We are not only talking regarding the right of two adults, but also the right of minors to both parents. There are cases where children do not have one of the two parents. Fate deprives them of these cases, not the State.
When the state places children in the care of two nannies or fathers, it permanently deprives them of the right to a mother and a father, violating the right of the children.
For children who already live in an environment of same-sex couples: This can be covered with a simple notarial deed, or with an addition to the cohabitation agreement, i.e. to the existing legal framework.
Recently the Minister responded and said that the change in the agreement would solve the problem of children but would maintain the different treatment of minors.
We are doing away with the nuclear family. Mother and father are two distinct emotional patterns. No one can replace them. The Constitution also says so.”
“When you equate cohabitation with marriage, then you will be forced to change the lives of those who have nothing to do with them. Some will surely resort to the courts for the titles Parent 1 and Parent 2. It has already happened in France… They will ask that the family be taught in schools as something more neutral, which will anger millions of parents…”.
Regarding the surrogate mother, he commented: “Surely someone will claim it in court. By what logic will we allow surrogacy for heterosexual couples and ban it for homosexuals? Married same-sex couples who, without health reasons, will turn motherhood into a profession and trade. The bill opens the door for things to happen that it does not foresee.”
Regarding the position of the Church, Antonis Samaras emphasized that: “The Greek Church is not “darkness” and “papadario”! You believe or not – I believe – you have no right to be ugly at the expense of the Church. The State is distinct from the Church, yes it is! But the Church has an inalienable right to speak its mind. Not everyone can speak their mind except the Church! We cannot discredit a Church that kept our Nation standing and today keeps Hellenism standing throughout the world. Listen, following all, to what Apostolos Doxiadis said. Everyone knows him…
He argued that “instead of the discussion being done globally and scientifically, it is being done under the pressure of a highly militant lobby”.
He also recalled the article of a brilliant clergyman and child psychiatrist, and underlined how a liberal society is another, and a witch hunt is another. That’s right: We have a witch hunt here!’
And he continued: “One of the most important living Greek philosophers and a regular interlocutor of the Prime Minister, Stelios Ramfos, came out and opposed the bill, emphasizing that children need a father and a mother, not “caregivers” who love them… And that “liberalism does not mean that a nurse can become a doctor, because he cares for and loves the patient”! “Homophobic” and Ramfos?
And then there were also many public figures from the broader Left, who took a similar position. Like Yiannis Panoussis, who came from DIMAR and was a former SYRIZA minister. “Extreme and sexist” and Panousis? What happened; Have we gone completely crazy? Or is the popular Dimitris Starovas right following all, who said the other day on TV, that we are now experiencing the bullying of the opposite opinion! — And I will not vote for the bill!
“Extreme” too? Where I sent the Golden Dawn in irons to Justice and they all went to jail? When then various – we won’t name names – both centrists and leftists urged me not to do it? And when some took five years to find a room to try them? “Extreme” me? Indeed, we went completely crazy…”.
