And for season 3, the French production company called on the expertise of the cetacean protection association, Mata Tohora. Scientific partner of the series, the association links the scenarios, verifies the scientific content and provides ideas for illustrations. As for the rescue of a sea lion, or the intervention of a care center for stranded or distressed marine mammals. “Without Mata Tohora’s endorsement, we would not have been scientifically fair” explains Natalie Altmann. “The idea is to instill with this series the need and awareness of saving the oceans in future generations.”
“The objective is to create a real dubbing market”

Beyond the protection of the oceans, Funny Zebra production saw in this remake “a vector of learning”, but also the opportunity to develop “a dubbing market”. Like Corsica, Occitanie or Brittany where more and more cartoons are dubbed into the local language. “Language can create a market in Polynesia in the audiovisual sector, put people to work and allow them to live simply by speaking their language” underlines the manager of the local production company, Frédéric Dubuis. “Like Corsica, the objective is to create a real dubbing market for future projects.”
Carried out by the start-up Speak Tahiti, the translation of the dialogues has already begun, with the expertise of a member of the Tahitian Academy. Their challenge: “stay as faithful as possible and adjust the length of sentences”, says translator Tuterai Mahai. A tedious job since it takes around 2 to 3 hours to translate an episode. Next comes the dubbing. In the original version, 12 actors lend their voices to around thirty characters. This is where Funny Zebra production comes in. To organize a casting call to find the lucky ones.
The credits will also be adapted into reo ma’ohi with a local musical composition and an interpretation by singer Teiva LC. Total cost of this adaptation in reo? 40 million francs. Between production, dubbing and post-production, more than 25 people are working on this project. Broadcast since Monday on TNTV, the cartoon is also intended to serve education.
On Sunday September 23, Te Mata Tohora will broadcast the first episode of season 3 in French for free as a world premiere. A screening which will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands.
