Oudéa-Castéra retains Sports and Games – Sport & Society

After several weeks of controversy, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra leaves the Ministry of National Education, however retaining the portfolio of Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games which is particularly strategic in this year of hosting the global event in France.

Lfollowing the government reshuffle – with the appointment of Ministers Delegate and Secretaries of State – leads this Thursday, February 8, 2024 to a remodeling of the Ministry of National Education, Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In fact, while the current Minister is under fire following her declarations on the private schooling of her children and the controversies following said declarations, the Head of State and the Prime Minister have implemented an overhaul of this imposing Ministry to return to the previous configuration.

Concretely, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra retains the Sports and Olympic and Paralympic Games portfolio which she has occupied since May 2022 and thanks to which it was able to work on the preparations for the Paris 2024 Games alongside the organizers and other parties to the project.

The maintenance of the Minister in this position reflects the unfailing commitment of the President of the Republic and the government of Gabriel Attal behind the Games, ensuring in fact continuity in monitoring the preparations for the largest event ever organized in France.

Furthermore, if the Paris 2024 Games are a major point on the horizonwe must also not forget that France is currently positioned for the 2030 Winter Games with the candidacy of the French Alps entering a phase of targeted dialogue with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last Novemberprior to the technical examination of the file during the spring and before the award of the Games in the summer of 2024.

Concerning National Education, the keys to this powerful Ministry are entrusted to Nicole Belloubet, former Minister of Justice between 2017 and 2020 under the first five-year term of the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron.

Member of the Constitutional Council from 2013 to 2017, Nicole Belloubet had previously served as Vice-President of the Regional Council of Midi-Pyrénées (2010-2013), following having been First Deputy Mayor of Toulouse from 2008 to 2010.

Beyond her institutional and political positions, the former Minister of Justice – also a university professor – was previously Rector of the Academy of Limoges from 1997 to 2000, then of Toulouse from 2000 to 2005, a period during which she was also President of the Interministerial Steering Committee for the promotion of gender equality in the education system.
