But the ÖTV ace is also playing for a final ticket in the double competition with Melanie Klaffner.

Just in time for the Billie Jean King Cup Austria against Mexico on 11/12. November in the Multiverse Schwechat, Sinja Kraus seems to be getting in better and better shape. After last week’s singles round of 16 and doubles final with Melanie Klaffner at the ITF W25 event in Heraklion, the Viennese is already in the semi-finals of this week’s ITF W40 clay court tournament at the same location in both the singles and again in the doubles with the Upper Austrian. In the singles it is her first semi-final appearance since the beginning of May, back then at an ITF W100 event in Wiesbaden (Germany).

What was also convincing was the way in which Kraus made it to the last four in the individual competition on the Greek island of Crete. The 21-year-old, two-time Austrian national champion remained without losing a set and absolutely safe in her three previous matches. After a 6:0, 6:3 over the 19-year-old Greek wildcard player Dimitra Pavlou (WTA 434), the sixth-seeded Kraus (WTA 224) also defeated the French Selena Janicijevic (WTA 272) 6:2, 6 :3 and in the quarterfinals on Friday the fourth-ranked North Macedonian Lina Gjorcheska (WTA 187) lost 6:2, 6:4. In the fight for a place in the final, a difficult task now awaits on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. CET: the Czech prodigy Brenda Fruhvirtova, who, at just 16 years old, is already number 139 in the women’s world rankings.

In the doubles competition, Kraus and Klaffner are so far on course for the finals in this week’s tournament with higher prizes. At the start, the two ÖTV teammates took on fourth seed Mariana Drazic (Croatia) and Ekaterina Makarova (Russia) after over two hours of play, a set deficit, two double breaks and a match point fended off with 6:7 (5), 7: 6 (4) and 10:7 in the match tiebreak. They followed this up with a smooth 6:2, 6:3 against Fabienne Gettwart (Germany) and Jenny Lim (France). Now the two will challenge the top-ranked Irina Maria Bara (Romania) and Dalila Jakupovic (Slovenia) at lunchtime on Saturday.
