Othman Al-Khamis raises controversy with a new fatwa on “mixed” WhatsApp groups for university students

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Kuwaiti preacher Othman Al-Khamis sparked controversy on social media, following he published a new fatwa on the inadmissibility of creating “mixed” groups for the purpose of studying on the WhatsApp instant messaging application.

Al-Khamis was responding to a question in a video clip he posted on his Twitter account, Saturday, saying: “It is not permissible (the existence of) mixed WhatsApp groups for the purpose of studying at the university, it is never permissible.”

He added: “It is a group of sideburns. The devil is present… it is not permissible. There is no need for these groups between young men and women in the university.”

While he considered that university professors can create groups on WhatsApp for the purpose of informing students of the required courses.

A few days ago, the Kuwaiti preacher sparked widespread controversy following he published a video clip entitled “The Infidels of the Qur’an”, amid stormy criticism of his position, and other comments that defended him.

Al-Khamis said in the video clip: “The one who says I do not take anything from the Sunnah, but only follow the Qur’an, these Qur’anic scholars who said that they are infidels.”
