Christina Ager set the best time in the first training session for the women’s World Cup downhills on the Matterhorn on Thursday. At the finish above Cervinia, the Austrian was 0.24 seconds ahead of her compatriot Emily Schöpf, who was clocked at 146.85 km/h and thus set a new women’s world record. However, it is uncertain whether the races will take place on the weekend due to the once once more poor weather forecast.
The next best Austrians were Ariane Rädler (8th/+1.35), Lena Wechner (12th/+1.65) and Magdalena Egger and Nina Ortlieb (14th/+2.02). A total of 16 Austrians took part in the training, of the other fixed starters like Ortlieb, Mirjam Puchner was 2.73 behind and Cornelia Hütter 4.35. The first training session originally planned for Wednesday was canceled due to strong winds. The ÖSV squad will be announced following a coaching decision on Friday.
“It was really easy to drive. The weather changes, it’s windy, so you have to take it with a bit of caution,” said Ager, who has her ticket for the European Cup in her pocket. Schöpf, who was fighting for a starting position, was happy with her performance; it was “quite appealing” for the first run.
Conny Hütter with a (too) long jump
Hütter, who caused a moment of shock during a jump, had less fun. “I turned a little too far to the right. The jump is 30, 35 meters. By the time I was back on the ground, I was no longer on the ideal track. And I didn’t go down there that often today. It definitely means one Find a faster line.”
